This Black Walnut flitch is one of the biggest local logs that we have ever cut. It measures consistently 40 to 60 inches wide and has a very uniform shape perfect for big single piece table tops. The log came from the Pennsylvania / New York border area and altogether there is over 1000 board feet in this flitch- very rare for Eastern domestic timber. The boards have rich brown color with some figure. Almost all the boards did have a center void / crack, a sign that the tree was dying. This void in some spots measures 6 to 10 inches wide by 3 or 4 feet long. These boards are still very stable but butterflys might be needed. The log is not perfectly clear but will be nice for somebody looking for table tops full of character. This flitch is very rare, therefore it has made our favorite flitch list.
