One of our Sawyer's Assistants was so highly impressed with this log that he had the following to say- "Wow I'm going to go on the record and say this is the nicest walnut log I have seen cut at Hearne hardwoods in my three years working here. It's amazing from its fine butt to its long crotch. It really does have it all- it's curly the whole way through... with some of the heaviest curl I've ever seen! This is a very old tree, harvested close by in New London, PA, so the growth rings are exceptional tight!"
This is actually just the branch log... the butt of this log is huge and has yet to be cut due to the fact that it doesn't fit on either of our mills. The color is rare and identifying this log has been a challenge: The bark looks like an American English Walnut but when we cut it the heart color was more like a Black Walnut... but not quite... could it be a half breed species? This log is basically free of any major defects. The crotch end is very nice and shows very little sapwood. Its shape is perfect for table tops. This is truly a one of a kind log and definitely one of the nicest on the yard. |
