One way that we offer lumber here at Hearne Hardwoods is in flitch form. A flitch is a log that was cut and then catalogued and stored together. This offers the customer the opportunity to buy matching material from the same tree. In most cases we cut these logs from side to side leaving the live edge, and creating sequential matching boards. Some logs are cut on an angle to maximize quality and figure. These boards usually have sawn edges, occurring when our Sawyer turns the log while cutting to achieve the best quality possible.
The inventory listed below only includes dry flitches. They have been air-dried 2 to 4 years depending on the species, and then kiln dried for 2 to 4 weeks. We generally kiln dry material to 6 to 8% moisture content. A few select species have been air-dried only, to prevent checking or due to the nature of the wood. If the material has only been air-dried we will mention that in the flitch's description.
Most European species and some exotic species are solely found in flitch form simply because it is the only way it's cut it in those regions. If you would like additional information or to see if other material may be available please call (888) 814-0007 or e-mail: info@hearnehardwoods.com.
