Yesterday I saw my year’s first robin. This has been a long winter and I am ready for spring. I look forward to the rejuvenation of life all around, flowers, leaves, birds and animals. Part of the beauty of woodwork is that wood is a renewable resource if managed responsibly. A well-managed woodlot not only sustains lumber production but also nurtures wildlife and our environment. Be careful and respectful of these resources; do not take them for granted. We need to be able to pass our love for woodworking onto our children and grandchildren.

Recent News:

Rick Hearne had an exciting trip to Oregon last month; He purchased five beautiful Quilted Maple logs; found a source for reclaimed timbers, which we hope to stock in the near future; and bought several enormous Big Leaf Maple burls.

The Big Leaf Maple burls have 5-6 foot diameters and weigh up to 9,000 pounds! One of these burls is of particular interest to us at Hearne Hardwoods- a 17-foot long cluster burl is destined to be the spiral staircase in our new office building.

Featured Wood: Sapele

Sapele, Entandrophragma cylindricum, once considered a more refined member of the mahogany family, it is now the industry standard for doors, windows and moldings due to the restrictions on its South American "cousin". It is used for both veneer and lumber and is highly prized when figured. Sapele is also used for fine furniture, architectural millwork, counter tops, flooring, outdoor construction and even tone wood.

This African lumber has a gorgeous reddish brown heartwood. It has a peaceful nature and medium texture. The trees can be huge, 4’ diameter logs are not uncommon. Normal material is 4-15" wide with 8-16 foot lengths. If you would like more information or to place an order please call (888) 814 ~0007 or email us at [email protected].

During the past month we have cataloged three new Sapele flitches, with figured ranging from medium to instrument grade- they can be found in our Flitch & Log Set Inventory or to simplify your search visit our Flitch "Most Recent" category. Smaller pieces can be found for sale on our Internet Store.
