My favorite holiday has always been the celebration of July 4th. "All men are created equal and demand to live free or die", that is pretty powerful stuff, now let's relax and enjoy the barbeque and fireworks! Unlike the holidays that have turned into commercial extravaganzas like Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving (can anyone say Black Friday, sure you can) and Halloween, the 4th still is mostly celebrated by friends and families getting together in the back yard or by the pool. What a relief to be able to enjoy a holiday without having to be whipped into a buying frenzy.

Recent News:

Rick Hearne took a buying trip to Europe last month; He started in France & Germany, searching for next season's QS French Oak. He followed that with a stop in Austria for some QS European Maple; a great substitute for Quarter Sawn Hard Maple and possibly the only species that we can honestly sell as a pure white product. Rick was highly successful on both accounts; we expect to receive this material in early fall. Click here to view a few pictures from Rick's European buying trip.

In late June, Rick was asked to be a participant on Armstrong Industries' "Wood Advisory Council". He had a great time spending two days with fellow wood enthusiasts.

Featured Wood: Masur Birch

Masur Birch, Betula alba, is also commonly referred to as Karelian Birch or Scandinavian Birch. It's lovely gold heartwood can be highly spalted and sometimes highly figured. The combination of spalt and figure seems to "suit" this species, with the right mix of both the outcome can be truly exquisite. Similar to the pattern seen in Birdseye Maple, figured spalted Masur Birch is prized for veneer and wood turning. Some other uses include furniture, guitar building, and inlay.

Due to the typical limited dimensions found for this wood, Karelian Birch is usually used for smaller projects or accent work. Normal widths run 2-10 inches with lengths of 1 to 4 feet. We customarily stock Masur Birch billets, turning blocks and flitch cut material.
