Last weekend Pat, Brian, and I visited our friends up at George Nakashima Woodworker. Once again I was overcome by the ambience of the place. I could still feel George’s spirit all around me even as I appreciated the new leadership of Mira and Kevin. When you encountered George you would walk away spiritually fuller. He is to this day the strongest spiritual presence I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. As you walk around the grounds in the midst of the blooming cherry trees it is easy to appreciate the symmetry of the buildings and how beautifully they compliment the contour of the property in harmony with the landscaping. This is consistent with the balance and sensitivity that they bring to their furniture building. They are open to the public on Saturday afternoons, if you make the time to visit you will not be disappointed by this magical experience.

Featured Wood: Flitch & Log Sets

This month we did not choose a particular species of wood to feature but instead our Flitch & Log Sets as a whole. For those of you who are unfamiliar with these terms, a flitch is a log that was cut into slabs and stored/ catalogued together in the order that it was sawn. Woodworkers seek out this material to use in book-matched projects. (Book-matched means when you use two or more boards that are in sequential order. Woodworkers do this because book-matched material will have the same grain and color patterns.) Sometimes people may refer to these log sets as boules. The true difference between a flitch set and a boule is that a boule contains all of the boards from the entire log, where as to be classified as a flitch you only need to have two sequential boards. All of this material will have a natural edge on both sides. Often this material is much wider than normal making it highly desirable for individuals making one-piece tabletops.

In our Flitch & Log Set Inventory you can view over a hundred sets that are dry and ready to be used. For your convenience we have created "quick sorts" so that you can easily view- domestic species, imported species, our most recently added flitches, our widest flitches, and our current "favorites". Please note that some of the material on our Favorites List is still GREEN- we just couldn't wait to show you!! You are always welcome to reserve boards from our Green material or logs that haven't even been cut yet.

European Walnut 9526

Announcements: Beautiful Persian Walnut Flitch- Just Cut!

European Walnut Flitch A4286-A4305: This is the biggest Persian Walnut that we have ever cut. It was found on an old Turkish homestead. Measuring 13 feet long at the longest point and up to 61 inches wide this incredible tree has about 1700 board feet of useable material!

The beautiful boards show the best color and figure that one could hope for in a Persian Walnut. In the centerboards it has gorgeous crotch figure- very unusual for this species. It also shows amazing "spider-webbing grain pattern" sometimes known as "marble cake" figure- the black stripy grain, considered to be the finest grain pattern of any walnut in the world. "Spider-webbing" offers a terrific contrast and is prized by gunstock makers. Along with gunstocks of the highest quality, these enormous boards are also perfect for many projects including tabletops.

Please note this flitch is GREEN. If you would like more information on this log or want to reserve a board today please contact Brian Hearne at (888) 814~0007 or email, [email protected].
