For specialty hardwoods this is the start of the new season. The sap has left the trees and logs are starting to be harvested. Today I am in Europe visiting old friends and exploring the treasures they have been putting together, olive, oak and chestnut. I have also purchased a beautiful large pommeled sapele log for the tabletops of the future. I never get tried of this travel when there is a new rainbow over each horizon. Nature still amazes me with its fresh offerings. We are truly blessed to be living in this garden we call Planet Earth.

What could be more festive than some vibrant Cocobolo- perfect for bright fall projects! A great choice for fine furniture, wood turning, carving, jewelry, inlaying, box making or any project waiting to make an impact!

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this species, Cocobolo, Dalbergia retusa, is a true member of the Rosewood family. It is probably most known for its brilliant red-orange heartwood. Over time with out ultra-violet sealants the color will oxidize to warm dark reddish brown. Cocobolo is a very dense wood; it has a specific gravity over 1! Featured Wood: Wenge

Love dark woods? Then may we recommend October's wood of the month... Wenge. Wenge, Milletta laurentii, grows in Central West Africa and has heartwood so dark it can be used as a substitute for Gabon Ebony.

Beautiful and unusual, the color actually ranges from brown to black. Wenge has medium texture and is very dense. Common uses are cabinetry, architectural millwork, wood turning, carving, flooring and veneer. Normal widths for this species range from 3-12 inches and typically have lengths of 8-12 feet. Please note: currently in stock we have flitch material with an average width of 27 inches and another log with an average length of 15 feet!! Even better... those two flitches are currently on sale if you take advantage of October's Special of the Month!

Announcements: Getting Closer...

Work has been done on and off throughout the summer and early fall on our new Administration Building. The bathrooms are almost complete, the plaster walls are finished, the radiant heating/cooling system has been installed, and this past week our custom made doors were hung.

We are hopeful to move into our new space by Christmas 2008, and to complete the project by Summer 2009.
